    AntiVJ showcase

These guys have consistenly impressed me.

AntiVJ is a visual label initiated by European-based artists whose work is focused on the use of projected light and its influence on our perception.

Clearly stepping away from standard setups & techniques, AntiVJ presents live performances and installations where projection on volume, visual mapping, tracking and augmented reality, stereoscopy and holographic illusion are providing to the audience a senses challenging experience.

AntiVJ teaser featuring recent projects by Aalto, crustea, Emovie and Lego_man:

++++ Le Mans (France), August 2007
3Destruct Louvain la neuve (Belgium), June 2007

    Procrastination…

procrastination Procrastination...I’m very guilty of this. I’m actually under it’s wicked spell as I type this. I have many many things I need to do and some I want to do. There is however an issue in that I procrastinate and end up on music forums, Facebook, Myspace and the like… which I’m aware of and annoyed at myself at, but not doing anything about.

So anyways, what’s the point of this little post then? Well as it happened I ranted on one of the many forums I frequent and one of the guys I have weird late night discussions with pointed me into the direction of a very helpful (if quite new-age) website/blog of a man going by the name of Steve Pavlina.

It’s a good read and gives a quick background on procrastination, it’s causes and presents a simple to implement solution. Namely breaking things down into little, easier to achieve chunks (timeboxing) as he calls it. And also to get into your head you don’t need to do things, but that you want to do things. Anyways, rather than have me ramble on, have a read yourself…

    Overcoming Procrastination

Thanks to Mikey for highlighting this. Hope it’s of some use to you. I’d be interested in hearing about peoples thoughts over this.

[review] Solar Chrome – Network City [Maschinen Musik]

The latest release on Maschinen Musik come courtesy of Solar Chrome with a remix by Boris Divider on the flip. (Maschinen Musik’s label boss did the 8th MANTIS showcase late last year. Click here for details)

Maschinen Musik 09 | released June 2008 (digital release)

    A – Solar Chrome – Network City
B – Solar Chrome – Network City (Boris Divider Remix)

    Solar Chrome – Network City
Atmospheric introductions, and a jacking electro beat. Swirling synth stabs and pads. This is proper electro and it’s damn tasty stuff. Distorted vox add to the driving menace. Halfway through and this track’s big bassline rolls into town. Pretty much perfect electro. Gonna be in my record box for some time.

Solar Chrome – Network City (Boris Divider Remix)
Seconds in and Boris Divider’s remix takes the original down a darker and harder tip. The vox are more prominent and menacing. Reminds me of Ion Driver’s style of padded and strong beats. This is machine music. Kraftwerk is clearly a strong influence for Boris Divider. This track is stripped down yet still big. Dark hypnotic shit. And I likes it.

    Overall
One damn solid piece of proper electro backed up with a darker minimally packaged remix from Boris Divider. A strong release that proves electro is still strong.

Si Begg – Jetlag and Tinnitus Part 3

Are You A Big Boy DJ?
Big tune. Grimey Bass. Krunk funk fun. Si Begg on top form. Rock solid dancefloor material.

I See Them All The Time
Deep dubbed out stepbass. A real late night affair. Minimal dubstep if you will. Big crossover potential with this. As a stand alone track it needs something more. Whack it in the mix and it’s a winner.

    You Shall Know Our Velocity
Another tune on the minimal tip. A heavy hint of wonk and a big yet understated jacking feel. Late night/ early morning hypnotic and proper business. The track builds subtly yet strongly.

    Better Living Through Distortion
Big. Again. Big. Glitched out distorted beats and bass. Wonky electro bass breaks with overdrive. This is screaming to be put on it’s natural home: a fuck off huge soundsystem. Massive tune. The melody half way hit the mark just right. Get this.

Si Begg – Jetlag and Tinnitus Part 3 (digital only edition)

    Rapid Eye Movement
Haunting synth leads us in, in comes the echoed space kick which continues until finally the beats are broken out. Jazzy broken beat. Glitchy in programming but solid drum sounding off from real drum hits. The signature jacking bass melody is very present. A wicked track, both uplifting and grimey.

    16 Lover
Glitch head nodding bass. Vocal snippets and scratches permeate all over the joint. Big booming bass interrupts the party samples. This is huge sounding. Short and to the damn point. Dunked in reggae and with an aftertaste of skank. Reminiscent  of Coldcut’s classic More Beats + Pieces.

    Revelation Revulsion
Kraut-rock acoustic chords and distortion lead us in. Dirty glitched (how many times can we use that word in a review) bass beats hit and once again Si is on fire with the production. A far left wonk attack.

    Sunshine 08
Again. Big sounding. Taking influence from the French Disco Glitch House a’la Ed Banger records and crew, which is currently hot in clubland. Well, Si takes it off at a different tangent and makes it his own. This is firmly in Mr Begg’s dimension of dancefloor.

    Overall.
2 very solid packages. Totally different and unmistakably Si Begg. Instant purchase.

Out in June. Check SiBegg.com for further details

[review] Fall of Liberty EP [Data Trace]

skull [review] Fall of Liberty EP [Data Trace]Cynthia Stern – China Belly Yum!
Straight, simple and with a bounce in its step. After the drop it picks up a grimey b-line. Structurally it’s verging on Ghettotech.
    Mazzula – Bass Bias
Simple beats and a wicked basslne combine to present an excellent rolling beast of a track. Solid electro throughout and this one really gets my vote

    Smashback – Ublerbruch
This is ace. It has an almost pop sensibility to it. The beats and structure remind me of Cursor Miner’s production wizardry. It’s that broken 4/4 beat that makes this track a winner.

    Smashback – Ublerbruch (Ardisson Remix)
This takes the original on a darker tip. Crisp beats, glitchy bass and and a undeniable solid and driven feel to the production. The beats are hitting all over the joint, and it really works. Careful on those hihats; they’re so sharp they’ll cut you.

A really strong reinterpretation of the original.

    Teutonic Kaboom – Terminal

Big wobbling bass. Scattered electro beats. Well packaged track which verges on a jacking vibe.

    Ver – Trade Off
Rolling dubstep’d vibes ooze from this track. Those keys give a twilight zone feel to the production.

    Overall
A solid EP (again) from the Data Trace crew. A good range of tracks, sounds and bass.

Highlights for me are Smashback’s original, Ardisson’s remix and Mazzula’s Bass Biaz.

Well recommended. Go on. Get this now. Instant purchase.

    38Label182 [review] Re:Connect Re:Works 001

Liz Melody – Forget U (Nuboy’s Acid Chops Remix)

Nice rolling broken house. Cut up and jacking. Good underlying melody. Very summer friendly this.

High Eight & Liz Melody – Rock My World (Bobby Lorenz & Kristoph Remix) + DUB

Rock sold tech/electro house with the vocal all subtly glitched up just right. Wicked driving plod feel to it. Can see it being big in the Tech House and Prog scenes. The looping vocal sucks you in and on a dark dancefloor and stupid o clock it’s going to be carnage.

Both not my bag but very solid remixes and have no doubt this is another winner for Re:Connect.

Kicking off a brand new series for 2008 are a very special selection of digital exclusive remixes of back catalogue tracks.  Re:Connect Re:Works will be an ongoing series of releases specially aimed at the digital market, and will contain a selection of your favourite Re:Connect tracks remixed and brought bang up to date by a range of our favourite producers.

First up is a double helping of Liz Melody, featuring one of her own singles, and her collaboration with label boss High Eight.

Forget U was only out in it’s original form mid 2007, but this stunning remix from Nuboy (whose previous work includes releases on the Stanton Warriors’ Beats label, and Future Funk Squad’s En:Vision Recordings). He takes the original vocal, chops the hell out of it, and adds driving tech-funk beats, soaring synths and an acid line that’ll make you drool.

Also included here is an awesome electro-house take on Liz’s collaboration with High Eight, from back in 2006. “Rock My World” is ripped apart and reassembled here by Bobby Lorenz & Kristoph (of D. Ramirez’s label Slave Recordings).  Adding their trademark 4×4 beats, bubbling bassline and just the right amount of vocal, this one is 100% tried and tested on the dancefloors and is sure to rock the crowd.  For those not happy with the small amount of cut up vox in this one, there’s also a handy instrumental.

Release date: 5th May (Beatport Exclusive) / 2nd June (All other digital stores)

Does this really need explaining? Such a simple idea that works so effectively. I’ve seen videos from this guy/gal/group before but never outside.

    this blog isn’t dead…

Just to let you know that this blog hasn’t died or anything silly. Granted there hasn’t been an update in about a month. Yea, sorry about that.

Combination of the new version of Wordpress glitching out the blog, being unable to resolve it and having flatline internet access at home. Now I could update the blog from work I hear you cry. Well yes, but my current workload is rather immense and I have very little doss time haha.

Anyways… the site is slowing getting together. The radio pages have just been updated and will be updated again later today with MANTIS016.

Also, got news of a new project happening on the 31st May.
