about makemassair

Mike Samaras

makemassair is a multidisciplinary, independent design creative.

Design

My work encompasses graphics and identity, strategy, music publishing, record releases, advertising, web development, sound, broadcasting, and radio production. Having worked with a variety of clients across multiple industries, I have an adaptive and expanding skill set. Leading to my being described as a Unicorn. An endorsement I wear proudly.

I studied graphic design and photography at the Reading School of Art & Design, before completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Contemporary Lens Media at the University of Lincoln in 2006.

In 2010 I was commissioned by John Rixon and Late at Tate to produce and direct a short film. My piece, sevenzero, premiered at London's iconic Tate Britain on January 8, 2010, as part of their Quiet Voices event alongside Roger Eno and Dom Theobald, Jon Hopkins, and Graina.

Following a decade as senior graphic editor and lead artworker at on demand content provider Vubiquity, I left in late 2020 retraining as a scenic carpenter for the TV, advertising and event industries. Alongside this I started working as a freelance graphic designer.

At the end of 2022 into the spring of 2023 I completed a front-end dev boot camp with edX. Following on from a UX, UI masterclass 2 years prior with the London based Intrapreneurs Club.

Music and broadcasting

DJing since 2003, I've had the privilege of playing many UK venues and some European ones too. I've headlined events in London, Ireland, and Germany, with countless hours in my happy place behind the decks. Some of my favourite sets have been at London spaces The Cause, Corsica Studios, and Electrowerkz, Berlin's Suicide Circus, and Liverpool's QUARRY.

In 2010, the same year as my Tate Britain commission, I took over management of the fledgling internet radio station future music, rebranding it as the 24/7 broadcasting platform futuremusic FM. In addition to acting as creative director, web developer, and station manager, I produced and hosted the show Mantis Radio. An electronic music show and podcast I had begun broadcasting in 2007 on Brighton's Brap FM. And a show I continue to produce today, over 17 years later.

As a broadcaster and DJ I am a former resident on Liverpool's Melodic Distraction, and the London stations AAJA, Threads, and futuremusic FM. As well as Exeter's SWU, and Brighton's Brap FM.

Since 2023 I've been broadcasting a weekly daytime radio show Mornings With, through Twitch.
